Phillipe Piat, the FIFPRO president at the time, said "the transfer system fails 99% of players around the world, it fails football as an industry and it fails the world's most beloved game". In 2013, FIFPRO launched a legal challenge against the transfer system. FIFPRO supported Belgian footballer Jean-Marc Bosman in his judicial challenge of the football transfer rules which led to the Bosman ruling in 1995. The emphasis was thereby laid on the freedom of the football player to be able to choose the club of his choice at the end of his contract. Indeed, FIFPRO likewise had in mind propagating and defending the rights of professional footballers. In addition, it wished to co-ordinate the activities of the different affiliated groups in order to promote the interests of all professional footballers. įIFPRO has grown from a European organisation into a global network and has done much to support countries on other continents – Asia/Oceania, Africa, and North, Central and South America – in their efforts to set up players' associations.įIFPRO tried to offer the players' associations or other interest associations the means for mutual consultation and co-operation to achieve their objectives. The latest congress was in Uruguay in October 2022. It was originally laid down that a congress would be held once every four years at a minimum. FIFPRO was responsible for increasing the solidarity between professional footballers and players' associations. The articles of association of FIFPRO were thereby adopted and the objectives accurately laid down. In the second half of June 1966, the first FIFPRO congress took place in London, just before the start of the 1966 FIFA World Cup. On 15 December 1965, representatives of the French, Scottish, English, Italian and Dutch players' associations met in Paris, with the objective of setting up an international federation for footballers. Lionel Messi have the most appearances in the FIFPRO World 11 with 16 appearances, whereas Cristiano Ronaldo has had 15 appearances occupying the second place. In addition, there are four candidate members. FIFPRO, with its global headquarters in Hoofddorp, Netherlands, is made up of 66 national players' associations. Truly, It's going to be a knock-down, drag-out fight. The Fédération Internationale des Associations de Footballeurs Professionnels (English: International Federation of Professional Footballers), generally referred to as FIFPRO, is the worldwide representative organisation for 65,000 professional footballers. And I'm not even including players like Romelu Lukaku and Erling Braut Haaland. Then, you have guys like Mo Salah, Neymar, Lionel Messi, Sadio Mane, and Cristiano Ronaldo fighting for that last slot. We can all probably agree that Kylian Mbappe and Robert Lewandowski will be in. While I suspect I can guess at least two players who will make the team, there are so many valid options. Here's where things get very interesting. And, I'd love to see Alejandro Gomez make it, but that's not happening.įinally, the attacking options. Guys like Jordan Henderson, Heung Min Son, and Thiago have a shot as well. As far as big names, I think Bruno Fernandes, Kevin de Bruyne, and Joshua Kimmich will walk away with this one. I don't know if he'd win, but I think he deserves a chance given some of the other names in the voting. For the life of me, I don't know why Thomas Muller wasn't included. Midfield is equally stacked, but missing at least one key player. For me personally, I'm really hoping Theo Hernandez squeezes it, but that seems incredibly unlikely. Both of them have been deadly at top clubs all of 2020 and deserve a spot in the team. Outside of those three, I think Sergio Ramos and Alphonso Davies are the most likely selections. Big Virg has been injured for most of this season, so I could see him being replaced. Trent Alexander-Arnold, Andy Robertson, and Virgil van Dijk all made the team last year, and it's not like Liverpool has slowed down. I won't list them all because it'd take forever, but here are a few that I think have a shot at winning. Next is defenders, where most of the usual names show up. Alisson maybe has a chance, but Neuer is the guy I'd most want between the sticks. Lets's take a look.Īt keeper, you can choose between Alisson, Thibault Courtois, Ederson, Lukas Hradecky, Steve Mandanda, Keylor Navas, and Manuel Neuer. For the most part, it's the names you'd expect given the past 12 months, but there is at least one glaring omission. So, sadly you can't be a troll and just have a team of keepers. As always, the TOTY vote in FIFA 21 lets you select one goalkeeper, four defenders, three midfielders, and three attackers.
